THE OLD SILK STORE
at Mouresi

The Old Silk Store guest house is a two-storey neo-classical building of 130 years, which for a short period in its history was utilized for the purposes of the local silk industry.

Its English owner has renovated it lightly and sympathetically with a view to preserving its most, distinctive features. Therefore, one can admire the lavish use of marble, the decoratively carved balcony facing the Aegean Sea 400 metres below, the well- trodden but still elegant steps leading to the main entrance, and the imposing white marble pillars that embrace the frame of the ornate wooden double doors. All this contrasts splendidly with the heavy, rough slabs of local grey roofing stone and the flag-stone courtyards around this village mansion. The overall impression reflects the architectural austerity and magnificence of the classical times.

The main accommodation is reached from a flag-stone courtyard via the marble steps that lead to the upper floor, where there are four bedrooms with sea, mountain or garden view. The bedrooms lead off a wide corridor in the shape of a cross. They all have exceptionally high ceilings, painted wooden floors with rag rugs and simple furnishings, shower and w.c. Each room has tea and coffee making facilities. One room has a kitchenette and fridge. Other rooms have a fridge or access to a fridge.

To the side of the house there is an apple orchard with the additional cherry, pear, peach, quince, greengage, chestnut and walnut tree. In springtime the Old Silk Store is amidst a flurry of pink and white blossoms with fragrant scents of honeysuckle and purple wisteria strong in the morning dew.

Cosy flag-stone courtyards bordered with roses, hydrangeas, camellias, chrysanthemums and grapevines encompass the building.

In these relaxed surroundings guests will find themselves enveloped in a peaceful atmosphere, and whilst planning the itinerary of their day.

The entire accommodation has central heating with individual temperature control in each room.

Within walking distance from the house there are 4 tavernas, a baker's, butcher's greengrocer's, barber's, a couple of grocery stores, a coffee shop and a petrol station.

There is a network of mule-tracks and footpaths that can be used to reach these facilities as well as the village square and the beach.

The Old Silk Store is an ideal base for those who are interested in having advice and guidance on walks all over Pelion. For further information on walking please see our section on Activities and guided walks.

For non-dedicated walkers car hire is recommended.
